EDWARDSVILLE – SIUE has announced a contract extension for golf coach Derrick Brown through the 2023-24 season.
“I’m very grateful to be the head golf coach at SIUE,” Brown said. “It means a lot to me to have the support of Chancellor Pembrook, our athletic director, Tim Hall and our associate athletic director Jaci DeClue. I feel we have done some great things during my time here and I am looking forward to the upcoming years.”
The 2020-21 season marks 12th season as the Cougars’ head coach and has overseen the development of 10 All-Ohio Valley Conference performers, including five All-Newcomer team selections and one freshman of the year. Brown was selected as the 2018-19 OVC Coach of the Year.
“Coach Brown demonstrates everything we hope for in a head coach and a mentor to young men,” SIUE athetic director Tim Hall said. “The emphasis Coach Brown puts on recruiting the total student-athlete is evident as we have a tremendous group representing SIUE at a high level in the classroom and on the course.”
Four of the top five seasons in terms of scoring average have come for the Cougars under Brown. SIUE led the OVC in scoring average at 291.5 for the 2017-18 season. In 2018-19, the last full season, the Cougars earned the best scoring average in school history at 290.3, finishing second in the OVC by just four percentage points.
In December 2019, a long-time dream was realized when the Harry Gallatin Golf Practice Facility was dedicated at Sunset Hills Country Club. The 1,840 square-foot indoor practice facility is named in honor of legendary SIUE coach, administrator and supporter, the late Harry Gallatin who envisioned a first-class facility that would increase student-athlete training opportunities.
“We are excited about what the future holds with Coach Brown at the helm,” Hall added. “With the addition of the Harry Gallatin Indoor Practice Facility, which coach was instrumental in making a reality, our student-athletes as well as future student-athletes will have a first-class facility to train in year-round.”
Academics has remained at the forefront for Brown’s teams as well. The 2019-20 team earned an Outstanding Team Award from the Golf Coaches Association of America, marking the 10th consecutive award for SIUE. In addition, 12 golfers over the past three seasons have earned recognition as All-America Scholars.
“I love SIUE,” Brown said. “The Edwardsville community and support within the athletic department has always made it a great place to coach. My family has been lucky to call Edwardsville home.”
